2017 Annual Conference

13th Annual Conference – 2017

   COME TO PORTLAND

   FOR TMI’s THIRTEENTH

        MOLINOLOGICAL

                  GATHERING

Maine once had about 200 tide mills, more than any other state in America. One of them in Portland would have made today’s environmentalists smile, for it used the power of both wind and tide to produce flour for local and export markets.

On October 27th and 28th sustainable energy enthusiasts will gather just across the street from that early Fore River industrial site at Stroudwater on outer Congress Street to hear about local tide mills and others from South Carolina to France.

Tide Mill Institute’s 13th annual conference being held at the Stroudwater Baptist Church includes two days of presentations and discussions about a variety of tide mills near and far. On Friday morning a low-tide field trip explores three early mill sites in Portland, South Portland and Falmouth.  The afternoon features informal presentations about local mills, such as the elusive Casco Mill that’s indicated in a number of historical documents but whose location has never been confirmed; there will also be a presentation about how to study and document tide mill sites one finds locally.

On Saturday an archaeologist will describe his work at the oldest French tide mill yet studied, a researcher will share his many years’ effort to understand the tidal rice mills of South Carolina and another tells the history of an early New Jersey mill on a tributary of the Hackensack River.

Maine’s place in the tide mill industry will be described as will the role of the Portland corporation that built and managed Stroudwater’s tide dam mill. Of particular local interest will be the story of a Portland family that was involved in five different local tide mills.

Friday’s field trip begins at 9AM.
Saturday sign-in starts at 8:30, talks start at 9.  Saturday lunch is included.
The conference fee is $40.
